Essay on The Challenge of Having Faith in God Today

The Challenge of Having Faith in God Today In Elie Wiesel’s book Night, one character professes to have â€Å"more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He’s the only one who’s kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people† (77). After all they have gone through in their rich and lengthy history, Jews have every right to feel angry toward God for not keeping His promises. God told them that they were His chosen people; but who would feel privileged to be a Jew if being â€Å"chosen† meant having to live through Auschwitz? For many Jews who lived through the Holocaust, their faith in God will never be the same. The question that many of them ask is â€Å"Why?† Why the gas chambers? Why the Jews? â€Å"Why has God apparently forsaken us?†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦Wiesel described how the Holocaust changed his faith: Once, New Year’s Day had dominated my life. I knew that my sins grieved the Eternal; I implored his forgiveness. Once, I had believed profoundly that upon one solitary deed of mine, one solitary prayer, depended the salvation of the world. This day I had ceased to plead. I was no longer capable of lamentation. On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was the accuser, God the accused. My eyes were open and I was alone – terribly alone in a world without God and without man. Without love or mercy. I had ceased to be anything but ashes, yet I felt myself to be stronger than the Almighty, to whom my life had been tied for so long. I stood amid that praying congregation, observing it like a stranger. (Night 65) The Holocaust had challenged his profound faith, and the Holocaust had won. In his forward to Wiesel’s Night, Francois Mauriac considers the idea that there were more horrors in the Holocaust than the obvious ones. There was also the horror of â€Å"the death of God in the soul of a child who suddenly discovers absolute evil† (ix). When people come face to face with the kind of evil that pervaded the Holocaust, it is hard to cling to their former faith. In another work, Wiesel adapted an actual experience in Auschwitz into a play set during the 17th century pogroms of Eastern Europe. While he was in Auschwitz, WieselShow MoreRelatedMy Life Experience And My Outlook Essay1627 Words   |  7 Pageswhen I was in college 23 years ago. Gambling And Pete Rose Essay Research Paper free essay sample

Gambling And Pete Rose Essay, Research Paper See a pupil who passes a concluding test under the influence of illegal drugs. The professor might be inclined to name the constabulary, but at that place? s no ground why the pupil shouldn? T get the class he earned. Then see another pupil who cheats on the same test. No offense has been committed, but as a pupil that? s the worst possible behaviour, and deserves the harshest punishment. # 216 ; Gambling is the worst thing a baseball player can make, because it undermines the unity of the game. Pete Rose did the worst thing a baseball player could make by non merely chancing on games in the NBA the NFL and college athleticss, but besides baseball games. Peter Edwards Rose was investigated by Major League Baseball and a hearing was scheduled for May of 1989. The scheduled hearing neer took topographic point and yet Pete Rose was suspended from baseball and placed on the ineligibility list. Pete could use for re-instatement after one twelvemonth. But less than one twelvemonth subsequently the Baseball Hall of Fame added a clause to it? s eligibility regulations saying that participants who were on Baseball? s ineligibility list could non be considered as campaigners. Commissioner Bud Selig said that the application would be considered at an appropriate clip. In 1997 Pete Rose applied for re-instatement about eight old ages after he was foremost eligible to make so. He was turned down # 216 ; The inquiry I raise is should Peter Edwards Rose be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for his outstanding drama on the baseball field, or be denied it because of a chancing dependence. In my sentiment Pete Rose should be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and besides be re-instated into Major League Baseball. Yes Rose did perpetrate a baseball offense and reluctantly admitted to it but every bit compared to some of the people in the Hall of Fame and in baseball Rose is no different. Guies who take drugs or crush their married womans wear? t get such rough penalty and many of them are still in the Hall of Fame and baseball. # 216 ; In today? s universe gaming is considered an dependence. If this is the instance so why non leting Pete Rose to be re-instated into baseball if he agreed to hold reding on the issue. President Clinton committed Acts of the Apostless that about got him impeached but the state forgave him and he is still the President of the United States, and yet after 10 old ages Pete Rose has non yet been re-instated to baseball or even allowed to take part in official events. # 216 ; In a canvass late conducted on Ivotefor.com 75 % or 198 of the 263 people polled said that Pete Rose should be re-instated, while a mere 25 % or 65 said that Pete Rose should stay out of baseball. The Hall of Fame is every bit much for the fans as it is for the participants. Then why International Relations and Security Network? t one of the most liked athleticss figures allowed to go on his baseball calling and be inducted into the Hallway of Fame. # 216 ; Rose late took another measure nearer to being re-instated. He has backed an Official Pete Rose Online Petition set up at www.sportcut.com. The request will be sent on January 31, 2000 to the Baseball Hallway of Fame with all signatures. I urge you to vote for Pete Rose online to better his opportunities. # 216 ; In 1999 Pete Rose was elected to the all century squad.
